COLORADO'S GOLD COUNTRY

The Gold Belt Tour

The GOLD BELT TOUR is a back country road trip through mining history, past and present, including the historic mining towns of Cripple Creek and Victor. It meanders through spectacular Colorado mountain country. In the fall, when the aspen turns, even the trees are GOLD. This true GOLD COUNTRY has produced more gold than the California and Alaska Gold Rushes combined!

CRIPPLE CREEK, Colo., "The World's Greatest Gold Camp," still has an active gold mine but now it also has limited gaming. Despite the gaming, Cripple Creek works hard to protect and preserve its history and is very tourist friendly. It sits in a valley at 8,500 feet elevation. Entering the valley from 10,000 feet, you have a panoramic view of the San Juan and Sangre de Cristos Mountains, and the Collegiate Peaks.

VICTOR, Colo., "The City of Mines," is an authentic 1890s gold mining town. Victor also works hard at self-preservation and is becoming a bit of an art and antiques colony as well as home to many modern miners. The 1890 Victor Hotel has been updated while being beautifully preserved, right down to the Bird Cage Elevator, which still takes you to your room. (The modern Bird Cage Cafe, surprisingly, has SPICY cajun as well as western fare.)

Those who purchase in person at HIGH SPICE ALPACAS, which is set at 10,000 feet in these beautiful mountains, just three miles from Cripple Creek and six miles from Victor, will be offered a High Spice guided tour of this rich and fascinating area, as well as an overnight stay at the Victor Hotel. Perhaps you'd like to come the last weekend of June, during Donkey Derby Days (when Cripple Creek's resident donkey population, remnants of donkeys abandoned by tired miners, is honored), or the third weekend in July, for Victor's Gold Rush Days.
